“PROUD PRELATE:
You know what you were before I made you what you are now. If you do not immediately comply with my request, I will unfrock you, by God.
–Elizabeth”
This is a letter Queen Elizabeth wrote in 1575 to a minion who disobeyed her. He was a Bishop, whatever that meant at the time. Elizabeth wanted to take one of his estates away from him so she could give it to a new male friend. The historians say that her new friend was good looking, whatever that meant at the time. The Bishop said no. Queen Elizabeth sent her letter. The Bishop changed his mind. Apparently a few people had much more land and money than they needed. Others ate poisonous green potatoes and walked around barefoot and covered in boils. That’s not nice and that’s not fair.
Wow. She was impressively efficient with her language too. Just two small sentences and he jumped. Well done, Queen.
Still, men have never gotten used to being unfrocked.
that’s why we need more queens
